Edson Álvarez will return to West Ham United, after a loan spell at Fenerbahçe.
The Istanbul club had an option to buy the Mexico international but decided against activating it.
Two months ago, Mexico manager Javier Aguirre confirmed Fenerbahçe wouldn’t be keeping the player. The midfielder represented his country at the World Cup, where England knocked them out in the Round of 16.
Bundesliga option for West Ham player
Edson Álvarez will have a break before returning to West Ham United, who will play in the Championship next season.
Sky Deutschland states 1. FC Köln are considering signing the 28-year-old and it would be a ‘real sensation’ if they were to secure his services.
The West Ham midfielder is not only open to a switch to the Bundesliga but wants to join them immediately.
However, it would be difficult for the German club to take him away from Nuno Espírito Santo’s side this summer, given the finances.
Köln aren’t willing to give up and are working to find a solution.
Club América are keen, but the player has ruled out a move back to Mexico. His firm desire is to continue in Europe, and Köln can help him fulfil that.
West Ham signed the player from Ajax in August 2023. Borussia Dortmund wanted to sign him in the same window before changing their stance. This allowed the English club to conclude his transfer.
Why West Ham could make it difficult
The Hammers have sold Mateus Fernandes to Tottenham Hotspur while Tomáš Souček appears to have suffered a serious injury whilst at the World Cup.
Edson Álvarez, Soungoutou Magassa, Freddie Potts, Mohamadou Kanté and James Ward-Prowse are the other midfielders. The latter spent this year on loan at Burnley and is unlikely to have future under Nuno Espírito Santo.
Therefore, West Ham could decide to hold on to the Mexican or at least make it difficult for a club to sign him. Álvarez has two years left on his contract and Transfermarkt value him at €15m.
