Nottingham Forest have suffered a massive blow in their efforts to sign Celta Vigo’s Javi Rueda late in this window.
The Premier League side want to sign a new right-back and have Rueda and Fiorentina’s Dodô as their main targets.
Nottingham Forest have decided to move forward to sign the Celta Vigo player and made concrete advances.
On Wednesday, Sport Witness covered a report from Spain explaining that the Reds are on the verge of signing the 24-year-old.
Big disappointment for Nottingham Forest
Journalist Víctor López took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to report that the La Liga side rejected Nottingham Forest’s offer.
Estadio Deportivo relays it and then shares their own updates, explaining why Celta Vigo took this decision.
The Spanish club have reached an agreement in principle with Oliver Glasner’s side for a €15m deal. Javi Rueda has given his approval, and the City Ground club were finalising personal terms.
However, the new development ‘radically changed’ the situation and Celta Vigo have now stopped his move to England.
Why Celta Vigo blocked Nottingham Forest move
Celta Vigo manager Claudio Giráldez publicly expressed his disappointment over the club’s efforts to sell Javi Rueda. He sees the fullback as a key part of his plans this season.
“If that decision were to be made, I obviously wouldn’t agree with it. Based on the figures being discussed, it would be a bad sale,” he said.
“He’s an important player for us, we want him here, and I’m confident we won’t sell him. He wants to be here, or at least that’s the impression I get from him.”
Giráldez’s desire to hold on to the fullback has been the key to reverse the situation. Last season, the Spaniard made 38 appearances, with four goals and seven assists.
Rueda’s move to Nottingham Forest’s was imminent. The financial aspect motivated the club to sell him. However, Celta have reversed the decision, giving priority to the sporting aspect.
This is a big disappointment for Oliver Glasner’s side as the defender’s move to England was ‘imminent’.
Rueda’s contract is until 2029, and the Spanish club now want to reward him with an improved contract.
