Tottenham’s Destiny Udogie has been linked with a move to AS Roma but it’s increasingly a transfer unlikely to happen.
The left-back has faced injury worries over the past two seasons. This hasn’t stopped him from growing as a player, and he’s improved since his time at Udinese.
Sport Witness have covered how the Italian media were sure Udogie wants to return to Italy. This optimism was dampened when Alfredo Pedulla clarified that the defender isn’t entirely keen on moving to Roma.
Tottenham are also causing problems and Roma are prepared to move on.
Spurs standing firm
Il Messaggero report Roma are keen on signing a left-sided wing-back who can rotate in that position with the impressive Wesley.
Udogie was an ideal target, however, discussions for the Italian have come to a ‘screeching halt’.
This is because Tottenham are not open to letting him depart on a loan. Even if the player wants to return to Italy, Roma’s ideal formula was to sign him on loan. They wanted option to buy too but things aren’t working out.
As a result, Roma will move on to Torino’s Alessio Cacciamani.
Our take: Player should focus on next season
Towards the end of last season, Roberto De Zerbi showed quite a bit of faith in the 23-year-old. Udogie thrived at bombing forward from left-back and made that position his own.
He now has Andy Robertson behind him in the pecking order and will learn a lot from the Scotsman.
Tottenham are trying to build a project that will propel them back into playing in Europe. That is exactly why Udogie should now focus on next season and look to impress under his compatriot.
