Atlético Madrid have identified Wolverhampton Wanderers‘ Hugo Bueno as a target as part of a plan to reshape their defence.
The 23-year-old left Vigo to join Wolves’ academy in 2019 and made his way to their first team in 2022.
Wolves sent him on loan to Feyenoord during the 2024/25 season and he cemented his place at Molineux last season. He made 38 appearances in all competitions.
La Liga interest in Wolves man
Last month, Sport Witness relayed news of Celta Vigo’s desire to bring him back to Vigo.
Celta Vigo haven’t taken the steps to sign the left-back while their La Liga counterpart are looking at him.
Thursday’s print edition of Mundo Deportivo covers Atlético Madrid’s interest in Hugo Bueno.
On Wednesday, the La Liga giants sold Matteo Ruggeri to Aston Villa, leaving them with summer signing Alejandro Grimaldo as the only recognised left-back.
Wolves player new target
Diego Simeone’s side have been working on signing Racing Santander’s Jorge Salinas. His club will only let him leave if his suitor activates his €16m release.
The Madrid club haven’t done that yet while their sporting director, Mateu Alemany, has Hugo Bueno on his target list. The Wolves player is a new target.
Online, Mundo Deportivo adds that as well as Salinas, Los Rojiblancos are keen on the Vigo-born fullback.
He left Spain at the age of 16 and is now a key player for César Peixoto. The English club’s relegation from the Premier League ‘could facilitate his departure’ in the last two weeks of the window.
Transfermarkt value Bueno, who has a contract until 2028, at €12m. Wolves don’t intend to let him leave and if there’s a sale, they hope to collect more than €12m.
In March, the defender said he would like to play in La Liga at some point if he can.
He said: “Yes, it’s something I would really love. If I get the chance, I’d be delighted to enjoy their football, which is some of the best in the world, and return to my country.”
Atlético have shown interest, but it’s unclear whether they can fulfil his wish this summer.
