Pierre Sage could be in line for a big job in France should he depart Crystal Palace in the coming weeks.
Foot01 report that talk of a return to Lyon is developing as the pressure increases at Crystal Palace following a poor start to the season.
The French boss is already facing pressure from Crystal Palace’s hierarchy despite only arriving in the summer. Reports in England have stated that Crystal Palace’s higher ups are questioning certain elements, particularly tactical decisions.
Canvot decision causes a stir
The recent decision to leave our Jaydee Canvot in particular has reportedly rubbed some of his bosses up the wrong way.
He has not really featured in Sage’s plans since the season began. The decision to leave him out for the defeat to Ipswich was “very poorly received internally” by the club’s management.
It’s added to an awkward situation. Particularly as Sage has managed just three points from four games and Crystal Palace appear to be struggling to adapt to life after Oliver Glasner.
Lyon fans watching
The news has not gone unnoticed back in France. In fact, the fanbase at former club Lyon are watching closely.
“No big deal, we need you in Lyon, Pierrot; your seat is waiting for you,” “It smells like a return to OL for Pierre Sage and Paulo Fonseca leaving,” “June 2027… Pierre Sage to OL, here we go,” and “We’re waiting for you in Lyon, Pierre” are some of the comments that can be found on social media.
Sage is still well liked at the club after initially joining the as academy manager. He was then appointed interim head coach in 2023 following Fabio Grosso’s dismissal.
A big turnaround followed as he lifted the club out of the relegation zone that year.
They then finished sixth in the 2023/24 season and reached the Coupe de France final the following year. He left in January 2025 after a dip in form and a cup exit. But fans largely consider the dismissal as harsh by then owner John Textor.
They simply felt that way as Sage then went on to join Lens. He led them to second last season and a cup win last season. Now they’re ready to welcome him back, if Crystal Palace decide to part ways.
