Newcastle United are yet to make the final decision on Odysseas Vlachodimos’ future.
The Greece international spent this season on loan at Sevilla and impressed during his time in Spain.
Sevilla haven’t secured a purchase option and as of now, he has to return to Newcastle United.
However, the La Liga side and the goalkeeper are keen on extending their association. In March, Sevilla’s then sporting director Antonio Cordón insisted the 32-year-old wants to continue.
The Spanish club can’t afford to meet both his salary and the Magpies’ demand. Despite the complexity, they aren’t willing to give up on him.
Earlier this month, Sport Witness covered claims from Spain that the La Liga side haven’t yet officially said goodbye to him. This is because they’re trying to secure his future.
Newcastle United yet to communicate stance
Monday’s edition of ABC Sevilla states Newcastle United are aware Odysseas Vlachodimos’ good performances for the Spanish club could help them recover part of the €24m invested to buy him in 2024.
However, Eddie Howe’s side are yet to inform the player of their decision as there’s been no talks with him or his agent so far. This should take place in the coming days, and the player is waiting for the Magpies’ decision before taking any further steps.
Should there be no significant role at St James’ Park next season, he will look for another option. In that case, he will prioritise a return to Sevilla. For now, these are the two options for next season.
If he were to return to the Spanish club, then the formula needs to be clarified. Sevilla would prefer a loan with a low purchase option.
Newcastle United could also sell him for a lower price in exchange for a preferential option for one of Sevilla’s young talents. His contract expires in 2028, and Transfermarkt value him at €3m.
There will be clarity once the Magpies communicate their final decision.
Our take: Newcastle United stay unlikely
The Premier League club have completed the signing of Ewen Jaouen and are reportedly working on a deal for Manchester City stopper James Trafford.
If the latter were to arrive, then Odysseas Vlachodimos can’t have a major role under Eddie Howe.
