Liverpool‘s Florian Wirtz says he needs to focus on his ankle, after twisting it “a bit” over the past few weeks.
The Germany international has maintained his place in the starting lineup under Andoni Iraola this season. He has started every league fixture for Liverpool and two of their three Champions League matches.
Iraola left the attacking midfielder out of the squad for the EFL Cup win over Tottenham Hotspur in September. That was the only fixture he didn’t feature this season. Wirtz has a goal and three assists from 11 matches.
On Sunday, the 23-year-old made his eight Premier League start in the Reds’ 2-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion. He picked up an injury and Trey Nyoni came on to replace Wirtz in the 65th minute.
Liverpool player shares positive injury update
After the match, the former Bayer Leverkusen man spoke to Sky Deutschland and Sport1 have relayed his comments.
When asked about the injury, he said: “We haven’t done any tests yet, but I think it’s not too serious. I’ve been twisting my ankle a bit over the last few weeks. I need to get that sorted out somehow. Then I think I’ll be back for the next game.”
Liverpool will host Chelsea in the EFL Cup on Wednesday followed by a league tie against Arsenal on November 1st.
Andoni Iraola may not consider Florian Wirtz for the midweek tie, after leaving him out of the squad for the last cup tie against Spurs. Taking his comments into account, the player should make it to the squad to face the Gunners.
Liverpool man’s message to critics
The German starred for Bayer Leverkusen, attracting interest from Bayern Munich and a few others. The Reds were successful in securing his services in June 2025. He’s yet to replicate the Bayer form at Anfield, leading to reports linking him to the Bavarian club.
Earlier this month, Bayern Munich president Herbert Hainer ruled out a move for Florian Wirtz. At the weekend, their honorary president Uli Hoeneß said it will be difficult to sign him in the future.
Wirtz’s performances for Liverpool have been the subject of criticism both in the UK and Germany. He has now sent a message to his critics.
“I don’t pay any attention to it at all. I really couldn’t care less what anyone has to say about me. So, everyone is welcome to talk about me. I simply play football because I enjoy it. Of course, I want to be successful,” Wirtz explained.
Initial signs are positive and barring a new development or tests results saying otherwise, there is no concern of a serious injury for Wirtz.
