Bayern Munich honorary president Uli Hoeneß says he’s not ‘glad’ about missing out on Florian Wirtz to Liverpool.

The attacking midfielder’s impressive performances for Bayer Leverkusen had caught the attention of a few clubs. He finished the 2024/25 season with 16 goals and 15 assists from 45 matches.

Bayern Munich wanted to keep him in the Bundesliga, while Liverpool and a few other also showed keen interest. The Premier League side were successful in securing his services for €125m in June 2025.

The Germany international hasn’t replicated his Leverkusen form at Anfield just yet. Last season, he managed seven goals and 10 assists from 47 matches, and five goals and four assists were in the league. This season, he has a goal and three assists from 10 matches.

President felt sorry for Liverpool man

The dip in form has recently led to suggestions of the Bavarian club planning to make a new attempt to sign the 23-year-old.

Last weekend, Bayern Munich president Herbert Hainer ruled out a move for the Germany international.

He said: “I almost feel a little sorry for him that he hasn’t yet reached the same form in England that he had at Leverkusen, because we also need him for the German national team.”

“We have such a top-class squad, we’re incredibly happy at the moment, and therefore it’s not an issue for us.”

Unhappy about Liverpool beating for signing

Uli Hoeneß, who is also a member of the German champions’ supervisory board, talks about the Liverpool player. He has been speaking to Welt, who specifically asks whether he is ‘glad’ to have missed out on Florian Wirtz in 2025.

Responding to that, he said: “No. Because Florian would play much better for us than he does at Liverpool. I watch a lot of the team’s games. They haven’t integrated him properly at all. In Leverkusen, he got every ball; in Liverpool, he’s just one of many.”

When quizzed whether Bayern Munich will make another attempt, given Wirtz’s ‘problems in England’, Hoeneß explained: “No. He has a long-term contract in Liverpool. They’ll try to integrate him better there.”

His contract with Andoni Iraola’s side expires in 2030. Transfermarkt value Wirtz at €85m, a €55m drop since joining the Merseyside club.
