Liverpool star Alexander Isak has admitted it was difficult as a new signing at the club last summer, following the death of Diogo Jota.

The Liverpool striker has been responding to comments from Andrew Robertson, who recently hinted that Jota’s death made it difficult for the new signings last season.

Robertson admission

Robertson recently appeared on The Overlap and admitted that he felt sorry for Liverpool’s new signings last year as they struggled to settle in because everyone was devastated by the Jota’s death.

The Portuguese forward died in a traffic accident during the summer of 2025. Robertson believes that football became secondary in the weeks and months that followed because a close friend – and a hugely popular player and member of the squad – had just passed away.

That, naturally, made it difficult for new signings, such as Isak, to integrate into the squad. The Swedish forward now admits that it was a difficult period for everyone.

“I understand. It was a tough period, especially for those who were already at the club,” he told Fotboll Skanalen.

“They know best what the team was like and how they felt, but you can certainly understand it.”

Atmosphere change

Alexander Isak

The striker does’t think it was hard to settle in, though. Instead he feels that new signings had to accept that things were going on behind the scenes.

“It wasn’t difficult to settle in as such, since it’s a fantastic group, but there might have been something going on in the background without one consciously realising it.

“Of course, you could sense the terrible thing that had happened, but it’s hard to draw conclusions. I didn’t know the people involved, but the atmosphere is good now, and that’s important.”

Fortunately for Isak, he has now managed to overcome his difficult first year at Anfield – which was also ruined by injuries – to establish himself as the first choice.

He’s started this season with four goals in five Premier League games. He’s already scored more than he managed last season. And he’s feeling the positives.

“I feel good, and I feel good physically. I’ve been healthy for a while now and have found some consistency. That’s the foundation for me to play good football,” he added.
