Celtic and Rangers were keen on signing Frosinone’s Fares Ghedjemis in the summer transfer window. Hopes of landing him later are now going up in smoke.
Sport Witness tracked how the two clubs were competing for the Algerian. This came right after the World Cup, as Ghedjemis became the first player in Frosinone history to play at the tournament.
That only helped his growing reputation, after he’d played a part in earning promotion to Serie A.
Celtic and Rangers made offers to sign him but they were never accepted. Late in the window, Monaco appeared to be closing in on the winger, however, an agreement was never reached.
Now, Frosinone are increasingly keen on keeping him.
Attempts underway
Thursday’s print edition of Gazzetta dello Sport says there is no stopping Frosinone right now. Frosinone are trying to keep hold of their key players, having placed themselves in
the Serie A top six so far this season.
One big aim is to extend Ghedjemis’ contract, which is expiring in 2028 right now.
Celtic and Rangers holding a series of negotiations to sign him is confirmed. The same holds true for Besiktas and Monaco but the Italian side are now against an exit.
Sporting director Renzo Castagnini has already expressed his willingness to work on a renewal. Manager Max Alvini’s opinion is the same, as he’s started using him regularly in Serie A.
Work is underway and a renewal could come soon.
Transfer hope all but lost for Rangers and Celtic
Frosinone wanted over €15m to sell the 24-year-old in the summer. The way they’ve performed in Serie A should help them earn more from a future sale.
The player will move on eventually and will hope to catch the eye of big Italian clubs. They would have a better financial capacity than Celtic and Rangers. Besides, they also present a bigger chance of going further in Europe than the two Scottish sides
Unless something dramatic happens, the Glasgow pair will miss out, especially if Ghedjemis signs a new deal.
