Sunderland‘s Brian Brobbey will withdraw from the Netherlands squad, after suffering a blow in their 1-1 UEFA Nations League draw against Germany on Thursday.
The striker has enjoyed a good run in this calendar year for both club and country.
After finishing his debut season at Sunderland with eight goals and an assist, he has three goals from five league matches this season.
New national team manager, Xavi, has included the 24-year-old in his first list for this international break.
On Thursday, the striker started against Germany and was on the pitch for 35 minutes. He picked up an injury, forcing Xavi to replace him with AZ Alkmaar’s Mexx Meerdink.
Sunderland player to withdraw from NT squad
In his post-match press conference, Xavi confirmed the Sunderland star’s blow. He needs to replace Brian Brobbey, and Voetbal Primeur have relayed his comments.
“Brian is indeed injured, unfortunately, so we will call up another striker. We haven’t decided who yet; I haven’t had time for that yet,” he said.
The Spaniard’s comments is a clear indication the former Ajax man won’t be part of the group for the remainder of this international break. Neither Xavi nor Voetbal Primeur didn’t mention the nature of his setback or who could replace him.
Brobbey seems to have suffered a hamstring injury. That’s according to NOS, who states Xavi doesn’t expect him to feature for the next three fixtures.
The manager needs to decide on the Black Cats player’s replacement. FC Twente’s Wout Weghorst and Manchester United’s Joshua Zirkzee, as per NOS, would be in contention to receive a call-up.

Major concern for Sunderland
Brian Brobbey, barring a surprise, will miss the Netherlands’ upcoming matches against Serbia [September 27th], Greece [October 1st] and Serbia again [October 4th].
He has enjoyed a good run this year. Earlier this week, the Dutchman’s personal coach, Patrick Woerst, explained why his form has exploded.
The player is likely to return to the Stadium of Light, where the Black Cats’ medical staff will make another evaluation.
His injury is a big concern for Sunderland, who have seven matches in October, after the international break. Régis Le Bris can only hope Brobbey won’t be out for long.
