Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez says he has always liked the idea of playing for Club Atlético Independiente.

DSports interviewed the 33-year-old, who had a spell in the Argentine club’s academy. He left them to join Arsenal in 2010 and moved to Aston Villa a decade later.

Former Independiente president Fabián Doman said he hopes the Aston Villa star finishes his career at his old club.

Back in 2020, the stopper admitted it would be difficult for him to say no to his former club.

DSports specifically asked the Aston Villa star whether he’s considering a move back to Independiente in the future. When responding to that, Martínez explained why it’s not easy for him to return.

“I always liked the idea of playing for Independiente, but I see it as a long way off. I have two years left on my contract, I have the World Cup ahead of me, I’m in my best form,” he said.

“It’s going to be very difficult for me to return. If I do return, I want to do it as well as I’m now.”

The Argentina international’s contract with Unai Emery’s side lasts until 2029, and after a summer of transfer turbulence his future is unclear.

The World Cup winner has opened the door to making a switch to Saudi Arabia or America. The Villans goalkeeper insists his family will have a say in his next move.

“I’m open to it. I know the Premier League is the best in the world, you compete in every game. The next decision will be to be with my family,” Martínez explained.

Martínez has five clean sheets from 15 matches this season.
