Aston Villa and Newcastle United are among the Premier League clubs tracking Goiás youngster Lucas Rodrigues. Attention around the 18-year-old continues to grow in Brazil.
The attacking midfielder has emerged as one of the standout performers in second division side Goiás’ 2026 campaign.
He was named the revelation of their state championship and has already secured a regular role in the first team. Across all competitions this season, Lucas Rodrigues has featured consistently, combining creativity with maturity beyond his age.
ESPN Brazil recently reported that the player has attracted interest from England. However, no clubs were initially named. In addition, no formal offer has been made.
Sport Witness sources have now reported that Aston Villa and Newcastle United are two of the sides monitoring his situation closely. Also we understand there may be wider Premier League interest which is still being clarified.
Premier League interest takes clearer shape
Lucas Rodrigues’ situation is still at an early stage, but the identities of the interested clubs add weight to the story.
The teenager renewed his contract with Goiás during the state championship and is now tied down until 2029. His release clause is set at €44m (£38m).
That figure reflects both his potential and Goiás’ current stance. Club officials have made it clear they would only entertain a significant offer.
Speaking about the situation, the player himself made it clear his focus remains on his current club: “Yes, I’m aware (of the interest), but I’m not thinking about that right now. I play for Goiás and my mind is 100% on Goiás. There’s still the rest of the season, we want to get promoted, and I’m focused here.”
From the club’s side, the message has been equally firm. Paulo Rogério Pinheiro, the club’s president, warned that any negotiations would require a major financial effort: “Officially, nothing has reached the club. But the whole world wants Lucas, not just England. His release clause is high and he has a contract until 2029.”
And he taunted: “Bring money and come talk directly to me. If you want to negotiate with us, come with a lot of money. Otherwise, he won’t leave.”
Playing style and profile
Lucas Rodrigues is seen as a modern box-to-box midfielder, combining defensive work with a clear attacking instinct.
Although he often plays deeper, the right-footed midfielder likes to push forward and arrive in the box. He attacks space well and looks to finish moves rather than simply recycle possession.
His numbers reflect that intent. Lucas Rodrigues has four goals and one assist in 13 games this season, a strong return for a central midfielder.
Calmness is one of his standout traits. In Brazil, he is often praised for playing with the composure of a more experienced player, which has helped him secure a starting role at just 18.
At 1.80m, he relies more on mobility than physical strength. He also showed resilience earlier this year, returning quickly from a serious ankle ligament injury.
Defensively, he is active in duels and reliable in possession. He also brings personality, having already performed well in high-pressure matches.
That balance between defensive discipline and attacking intent is a key reason behind growing interest from England and Brazil’s youth setup.
Aston Villa and Newcastle United patterns in Brazil
Lucas Rodrigues’ emergence fits neatly into recruitment patterns seen from both Premier League clubs.
Aston Villa have already moved into the Brazilian market recently. Securing a deal for Alysson Edward from Grêmio was key. That operation showed both confidence and infrastructure in place to identify and sign young talent before their value peaks.
Newcastle United, meanwhile, continue to be linked with a wide range of Brazilian prospects. Their scouting activity in the country has been consistent, with a dedicated project focused on the Brazilian market led by Ross Wilson.
What happens next
Lucas Rodrigues is also being closely watched by Brazil’s youth setup, with national team observers attending recent matches. A call-up to the Under-20 squad could further raise his profile ahead of the summer window. His future work permit depends on that.
For Aston Villa and Newcastle United, this is yet an early-stage tracking process rather than an imminent transfer battle. However, with a long contract in place and Goiás open to selling at the right price, the situation is one to monitor.
If either club decides to move beyond scouting and into negotiations, they will need to match a valuation designed to keep suitors at bay.
