Diego Gomez could return for Brighton and Hove Albion before the end of the season, with the World Cup not ruled out either.

The midfielder’s agent has provided a positive update on the 23-year-old’s situation amid fears he would miss the World Cup this summer.

Injury worries

The Paraguayan midfielder limped out of the 2-2 draw with Tottenham earlier this month with a suspected long-term knee injury.

He’s expected to be out for at least 45 days with the problem, meaning he’ll miss the end of the season and potentially the World Cup.

Sport Witness reported three days after the initial injury that things were not looking good for the midfielder. Initial scans had led to growing concern, and more were planned to get a better diagnosis.

A report earlier this week then didn’t provide a positive update either. Although, it was made clear the injury was not as bad as first though, so that was something.

Agent provides hope

Now Gomez’s agent has provided a more positive outlook. And the good news is that the Brighton midfielder does not need surgery.

Vs Sports Radio had an interview with Renato Bittar today and he confirmed the Brighton man would not require surgery. Instead, he explained that the injury is being treated ‘day by day’. As a result, his client could return for Brighton before the World Cup.

“The main thing is to stay calm,” he said.

“There’s no need for him to go through surgery or a long process of strengthening and physiotherapy to get back to his best level. The situation is not as serious as it first seemed.

“Yes, that’s a possibility (he could play soon). The recovery is going well, and that allows us to think he could return sooner than expected.

“I think it scared him a lot as well. We all subconsciously think about the World Cup, and that weighs on you. The impact was more emotional than physical, which is why he reacted that way.”

World Cup hopes

The positive update from Bittar is certainly welcome given it appeared that Diego Gomez was set to miss the World Cup this summer.

The Brighton man is a key player for Paraguay. He was visibly in tears when taken off against Tottenham earlier this month.

Given this is his nation’s first qualification for the World Cup since 2010, it’s a tournament he absolutely won’t want to miss. Now, it seems, there is hope that won’t happen, so long as there’s no complications between now and the end of the season.
