On Saturday, we covered Portuguese newspaper Record claiming Matheus Nunes’ move from Sporting to Everton was ‘practically certain’, as the ‘general terms’ for the transfer had already been drawn.

The outlet wrote that the Toffees’ signing had nothing to do with their choice of a new manager, as the midfielder could arrive at the Goodison Park regardless of who his boss would be.

Well, it now looks like Record changed their mind, because today, they have a few words saying exactly the opposite.

They write that Nunes is being negotiated with Everton, but his situation should only be sorted ‘once the Toffees present a new manager’.

They write that this process had a ‘setback’ due to Tottenham’s approach for Nuno Espírito Santo, who was Everton’s first choice for the coach position.

Now even though Record are now contradicting themselves, this is an update which does make sense.

Speaking to our sources last week, Sport Witness learned that negotiations are indeed taking place, but a transfer would only happen later in the transfer window.

This isn’t good for Sporting, who’re still trying to line up their first sale of the summer.
