Niclas Fullkrug couldn’t really make an impact at West Ham and has now opened up about his return to Germany so far.

The striker spent the second-half of last season on loan at AC Milan. His struggles continued at the San Siro, as he could never become a regular starter under Max Allegri.

As a result, Milan didn’t exercise their option to buy him permanently. He returned to West Ham in the summer and then joined Werder Bremen on another loan deal.

But his return to Germany has paid off, as Fullkrug has found the net 11 times in nine games in all competitions.

He has now revealed details of his time at the San Siro, also clarifying how things were in the summer.

Player wanted longer stay

Fullkrug spoke to MilanNews and revealed that he still has a lot of affection for his time at the San Siro.

“Yes, of course. It’s a new season now, but I could have scored a few more goals and provided a few more assists at AC Milan, too. It was a bit of an unlucky period, and not the most effective in terms of goalscoring, but I still think I put in several good performances.”

“It was a truly, truly wonderful time, and I still have great affection for AC Milan.”

The Germany international also compared the San Siro’s atmosphere to how things were at Dortmund.

“Yes, it’s quite similar to Dortmund. In Dortmund it’s a little different, there are still a few more people. But San Siro is amazing! It’s a historic stadium, special and truly, truly wonderful.”

The 33-year-old revealed that he wanted to stay beyond last season but a deal required a lot of negotiations with West Ham.

“It’s difficult, difficult! Ultimately, the decision isn’t down to just one person. There were West Ham and AC Milan. There have been many changes at the top of AC Milan, and so.”

“I still follow AC Milan, I watch the games, and I’m still in touch with some of the players and the lads.”

Our take: Right decision made

As of now, Fullkrug is one of the most in-form strikers in Europe and he clearly feels at home. That has been missing for the last two seasons. Even at Milan, it felt like he was never a part of the club’s plans.

While West Ham will look at his form with regret, the same applies to the Rossoneri.

Young Francesco Camarda has struggled to make an impact this season. Goncalo Ramos has done well but is lacking confidence in front of goal. Fullkrug is the exact opposite and is scoring goals at will.
