KVC Westerlo’s Matija Frigan was heavily linked with a move to Sunderland in the winter market.

Back in January, we covered claims from Croatia which stated Régis Le Bris was keen on signing the striker. It was even reported his transfer to Sunderland was close, but the move didn’t materialise in the end.

The 22-year-old is still with the Jupiler Pro League club and now gave an interview to Croatia’s Germanijak. The majority of the interview is focused on his season so far and he was also quizzed about the Sunderland links in January.

He was specifically asked whether the Championship club’s interest was serious or was it just a media speculation. When responding to that, Frigan stated he was open to making a switch to the Stadium of Light in the last window.

“I think it was serious. I don’t worry about it. I’ve people who follow it, but I’ve heard at the club that it’s being talked about,” he said.

“I liked the idea, but when it didn’t go through, I put it out of my mind the next morning.”

Frigan has impressed for the Belgian club this season, scoring 11 goals and registering three assists from 34 games. The Croatian’s contract lasts until 2028 but believes the summer window could present him a new opportunity to change clubs.

“The summer is coming, maybe a new opportunity, but I have a solid contract, the club decides everything,” Frigan explained.

At this point in time, it’s unclear whether Frigan is still a target for Sunderland for the next window.
