Martijn Krabbendam has urged Manchester United to part ways with Michael Carrick to make room for former Liverpool manager Arne Slot.
The Dutchman is without a job since Liverpool showed him the exit door in May. The Reds have appointed Andoni Iraola as his successor.
Liverpool are fourth in the Premier League while Manchester United are 16th in the table. The Red Devils have endured a difficult run so far, winning only one of their eight Premier League matches and collecting seven points.
Brighton & Hove Albion knocked them out in the EFL Cup in September while Carrick’s side have one win from three Champions League matches. Their last win was against Sabah on September 10th.
Ex-Liverpool boss for Manchester United

At the weekend, Michael Carrick saw his side suffer a 3-0 defeat to AFC Bournemouth at home. Kenneth Perez, Martijn Krabbendam and Sjoerd Mossou analysed this fixture and the Red Devils’ situation for ESPN NL. Voetbal Primeur have relayed their comments.
Krabbendam, who covers Feyenoord and Oranje for Voetbal International, backed the Red Devils to appoint Arne Slot.
He said: “They need to bring in Arne Slot. If he wants to go there, they should fire Carrick immediately.”
Mossou, another Dutch journalist, slams Manchester United’s current leadership under Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
“It is the worst-managed club in the world. It hasn’t improved since Jim Ratcliffe took over. He came in with big plans when Erik ten Hag was still there. He, too, hasn’t achieved anything at all so far. It is one big mess,” Mossou explained.
“They initially wanted to continue with Ten Hag, and later they fired him anyway. Then the sporting director stepped down as well. It just keeps muddling along like that.”
Slot’s future plans
It’s unclear whether Manchester United will consider Arne Slot if they decide to replace Michael Carrick.
The Netherlands have appointed Xavi as Ronald Koeman’s successor. Prior to this, there were talks about Arne Slot as the main candidate for the national team job. In August, the former Liverpool man was quick to dismiss it, insisting he wants to manage a club.
He said: “At this stage of my career, I prefer to see myself on the training pitch with my players every day. Something that is simply not possible in the same way with a national team.”
Slot left Feyenoord for Liverpool in 2024 and helped them win the title in his first season. Last season, the Anfield club finished fifth despite investing heavily in the summer of 2025.
The Dutchman’s Liverpool record:
- Matches: 113
- Wins: 66
- Draws: 18
- Losses: 29
- Goals scored: 227
- Goals conceded: 140
