Southampton look likely to miss out on the permanent signing of goalkeeper Daniel Peretz thanks to the Spy Gate drama.
BILD’s Ruhr Ost edition report that the goalkeeper will return to Bayern Munich this summer thanks to Southampton’s failure to secure promotion.
Spy Gate consequences
The newspaper explains that Daniel Peretz’s loan deal includes a purchase clause, worth €8m, which would have been triggered if they had achieve promotion.
Instead, because they have been kicked out of the play-offs due to Spy Gate, that now can’t happen. As a result, he must return to Munich this summer. BILD describe it as a ‘bitter blow’ for the 25-year-old, who had been happy.
He’s impressed at Southampton since joining on loan in January and has hinted he would like to make the move permanent. That, for now, is off the table as the Spy Gate drama continues.
Downs returns
Bergedorfer Zeitung provide more bad news for Southampton too. According to them, Damion Downs is set to return following an unsuccessful loan spell in Germany.
The 21-year-old has been on loan at HSV Hamburg since January after failing to impress for the Saints since joining last summer.
But he’s made no impact at the German club since his arrival. He managed 12 appearances for the without a goal, or an assist. He also featured in just 31% of the available minutes since his arrival, another sign of his complete lack of impact.
Indeed, the newspaper reports he has ‘fallen out of contention’ of late. Now he will be returning to Southampton, where his current contract runs until 2029.
What happens to him beyond this summer, remains to be seen. It’s hard to imagine he’s a part of the plans, particularly after Cyle Larin’s performances on loan. But with the Premier League now gone, tough decisions will have to be made, as is happening with Daniel Peretz.
