Djed Spence has grown in stature at Tottenham and is now attracting transfer attention from one of Europe’s biggest clubs.
The 25-year-old played 30 times in the Premier League last season, filling a variety of positions. He wasn’t always great but his availability proved to be a positive, when the squad was hit by multiple injury problems.
Because of his ability to confidently take his man on and his versatility, Spence will play at the World Cup.
Back in March, Sport Witness covered Juventus’ interest in the full-back. They viewed Spence as a European-level signing, as he’s also played ten times in the Champions League for Tottenham.
The Old Lady remain interested and they are making in-roads over a deal.
Moves being made
Gazzetta dello Sport note that Andrea Cambiaso is one of the key candidates to leave Juve in the summer.
The Italian side see Spence as a possible replacement. Like the Italian, he can play on either side and also further forward.
Juve sporting director Marco Ottolini knows the Tottenham player from his time at Genoa. He was key to signing him on loan and still likes him quite a bit.
Ottolini is driving the deal and that is why ‘quiet moves’ have been made already. Juve initially wanted Andy Robertson but the Scotsman’s moving to Spurs ruled out that option.
The Bianconeri know Tottenham aren’t an easy club to negotiate with.
Spurs might need Spence
While not always consistent, the Englishman’s ability to play multiple positions is a real bonus. There is no certainty over which players Tottenham will sign and if they do miss out on wide targets, Spence can play a makeshift role in the winger positions.
He remains their back-up right-back and De Zerbi has seen value from him while using him on the right-wing.
Besides, there is no obvious reason to sell Spence. He has displayed some of fight to make a mark in London. Under Antonio Conte, he seemed like a signing the Italian never really wanted. This led to his loan to Genoa, where he had a decent few months.
