Crystal Palace completed the signing of Darío Osorio on deadline day. However, more details from Chile now reveal how the Eagles structured the deal.
The 22-year-old arrived from Midtjylland after a frantic final day. This saw him leave Denmark and fly to London to complete the move.
At the time, reports from Denmark put the transfer at around £24m (€27.8m). Chile’s La Tercera now provides a different breakdown.
They report Osorio has initially joined Crystal Palace on loan, with an obligation to buy included in the agreement.
Crystal Palace deal can go over €30m
According to the Chilean newspaper, Palace will pay Midtjylland a €1.7m (£1.5m) loan fee for Osorio. The agreement then contains a €25.8m (£22.3m) obligation to buy, plus another €3.4m (£3m) in potential bonuses.
That takes the complete package to around €30.9m (£26.7m) if all the variables are eventually triggered. However, it’s a little different from how the deal was presented during deadline day.
The figures don’t match perfectly, although that could simply come down to which elements of the package are being included in each calculation.
What appears clear from the Chilean information is that Palace haven’t paid the entire transfer fee immediately.
Universidad de Chile waiting for their share
There’s another consequence of that structure. Universidad de Chile, the club where he came through the youth ranks, retained 10% of Osorio’s economic rights when they sold him to Midtjylland in 2023.
La Tercera calculates the Crystal Palace operation should therefore eventually bring the Chilean club more than €3.1m (£2.7m). However, they won’t receive all of that immediately.
Because Osorio’s move has initially been structured as a loan, Universidad de Chile will have to wait. They must wait for the permanent transfer to be completed before collecting the relevant money.
Osorio had originally moved to Denmark three years ago, with Universidad de Chile selling 90% of his rights for around €4.6m (£4m).
The newspaper calculates that, once the money from his Crystal Palace move arrives, the winger will have generated around €8.6m (£7.4m) for his boyhood club.
In the end Osorio is already a Palace player for this season. However, the larger payment to Midtjylland comes later.
