New Sevilla president Jose Maria del Nido Carrasco has appeared to hit out at Aston Villa director of football Monchi, blaming him for the Spanish side’s recent struggles.
Del Nido Carrasco was presented before the media yesterday as the new president at the Spanish side following a Board of Directors meeting on December 31st.
That’s been followed by the usual press obligations and an interview on Canal Sur Radio, which Vamos Mi Sevilla covered.
It was during that interview he appeared to hit out at former colleague and now Aston Villa director of football Monchi, who left the club last summer to move to Villa Park.
The Spaniard had once been the darling of Sevilla, as many considered him the mastermind behind their successes in Europe over the last decade or so, but had been struggling to replicate that in his second spell amid a worsening relationship with his fellow board members.
Both sides have commented on the matter in the months since and now it’s the turn of Del Nido Carrasco, who did not hold back.
“Monchi has not congratulated me on the position,” he is quoted as saying.
“Anyway, now it’s time to talk about Victor Orta. I think the ideal time to replace him was last season. It was a bad campaign, and he was one of those responsible.”
Vamos Mi Sevilla, and thus Sevilla fans, are having none of that, though. They label the president’s comments as ‘some unintelligent words’ and insist that ‘it is known’ it was actually him and Pepe Castro who made ‘many of the decisions’ that have led the club to where they are.
Furthermore, they say that ‘when Monchi was allowed to work, the team’s resurgence came’, indicating their loyalty still lies with the former king and the new president’s attempts to side swipe him are not going down well at all.
