Marc Overmars has excelled in his role as director of football at Ajax and has built a competitive squad over the past few years.
Newcastle United’s present owners have identified him as a target, but the Dutchman has been advised to join Arsenal or Barcelona instead.
He had a playing career of close to two decades between 1990 and 2009. Overmars left the Netherlands for the first time when he joined the Gunners in 1997.
Freek Jansen, the editor-in-chief of Voetbal International, follows the Eredivisie winners closely.
Overmars’ contract at the Amsterdam club runs down in 2024. The journalist has urged the Dutchman to continue at Ajax for a few more years and take the next step by joining a club like Arsenal.
“I also have the feeling that Overmars is in such a good place now, together with Edwin van der Sar and Ten Hag. If he can do this and he can take another step, then think of Arsenal or Barcelona,” Jansen said.
“There will be more beautiful clubs than Newcastle United for Overmars and Ten Hag.”
It’s not the first time Arsenal has been presented as a likely destination for the Dutch director, and it may well be something the Gunners can consider in the medium term.
