Everton can sign Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge for £25m this summer but will face competition from Arsenal for his signature.
That’s according to Transfermarkt, who say the Norwegian’s release clause is significantly lower than has been reported elsewhere.
Berge is widely expected to leave Sheffield United this summer following their relegation from the Premier League.
A report in England today named Arsenal and Everton as suitors and claimed that both clubs were considering a bid for him.
That price had already dropped from £45m, but according to Transfermarkt’s information, his real price is even lower than that.
They report that the clause is ‘even well below’ the figure that has been stated, and he will be ‘able to leave’ for a fee of £25m. If any of his suitors were to match that, he would be United’s most expensive sale in their history.
It now remains to be seen if either Everton or Arsenal will match it. The Toffees do desperately need midfield reinforcement, and £25m is a figure that is very much in their ballpark.
Indeed, they paid a similar amount to sign Abdoulaye Doucoure from Watford last year, so they’re clearly not against paying out for players who have recently been relegated.
Arsenal’s needs aren’t quite as clear, although, with Martin Odegaard and Dani Ceballos set to return to Real Madrid after their loans, there will be a hole to fill.
Berge could do that, and with him available for much cheaper than reported, it would not be surprising to see the links to the Gunners and Everton continue this summer.
