Marcelo and Sergio Reguilón are the two recognised left-back at Real Madrid.

Marca claims Zinedine Zidane’s idea is to allow the 22-year-old to go out on loan and bring in a player who can provide competition to the Brazilian.

For this reason, the manager has requested the club to sign Lyon’s Ferland Mendy as he looks to strengthen the left-back position for next season.

Having identified several targets, the France international is the ‘chosen one’ for Los Blancos as his characteristics are similar to that of Marcelo.

He was followed by Barcelona last summer and even though their technical secretary Eric Abidal is a fan of his compatriot, the La Liga winners decided against signing him.

Zidane has ‘directly’ contacted Mendy and informed about his interest, the report explains the player is delighted with the thought of playing for Real Madrid next season.

Marca end their report by claiming that ‘Everything indicates that next season [Marcelo] will have more competition with Ferland Mendy’.

Apart from Real Madrid, the 23-year-old is also attracting interest from Napoli and Sevilla and with four years left on his contract, the Ligue 1 outfit could demand around €35-€40m to sanction his sale.

Earlier reports in Italy suggested that Napoli find the fullback’s asking price too high and this could provide an advantage to the 13-time European champions.
