Some of the English media’s coverage about Liverpool’s chase for Arne Slot seems to be generating anger in sections of the Dutch press.
A lot has been said about the Feyenoord coach lately, and even though the Eredivisie isn’t exactly the most watched league in Europe, many people are aware of his achievements… but some are not.
That’s the reason why Voetbal International journalist Süleyman Özturk is now annoyed about what he clearly feels are ignorant comments. In quotes brought by FC Update, the pundit claimed there’s been some awful analysis around Slot’s move to Liverpool.
“About the English you can say that they are islanders and they have a habit of not looking beyond the island. The English clubs are a bit more advanced than the public and analysts, because a lot of nonsense comes out.”
FC Update points out that some of those comments were directly made towards Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler, who has apparently said he had to Google the manager’s name.
“That you don’t know Arne Slot, for me that’s a reason to take you off the air. Whatever country you live or work in, that’s just crazy.”
Even Liverpool fans ended up getting mentioned in the conversation, although Süleyman believes the supporters have an excuse for not knowing much about the manager.
“That Slot is not known to the Liverpool public, I understand that. You’re a Liverpool fan and you don’t sit down to watch Feyenoord, then you’d have a strange hobby. If you don’t know someone, you go and see what he looks like. He has since been called an Erik ten Hag 2.0, but you have to immerse yourself in him.”
Slot has only had two jobs as a first team coach, and both of them were in the Netherlands, he was in charge of AZ Alkmaar until taking over Feyenoord in 2021. In his 145 games at his current club, he has a record of 94 wins, 27 draws and 24 losses.
