West Ham United forward Javier Hernandez has been selected in Gazzetta dello Sport’s European Team of the Week for the weekend’s round of matches.

Each week the Italian newspaper selects the best eleven from players outside of Serie A, and this week the Mexico international has been picked after his performance against Southampton on Saturday.

Hernandez has been included despite West Ham’s 3-2 defeat to Southampton, which shows his individual contribution.

The West Ham summer signing scored two goals for the Hammers, which helped his side draw level with Southampton after going 2-0 down.

However, a late penalty denied West Ham their first points of the season, and they remain at the foot of the Premier League table after the opening two games.

Hernandez’s goals are going to be crucial for West Ham in this campaign, following his move from German side Bayer Leverkusen.

Slaven Bilic’s side struggled for goals last season, and with Hernandez’s proven record with in England with Manchester United he should help to address this problem.
