Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso has been named in the Gazzetta dello Sport European Team of the Week following his performance against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Each week the Italian newspaper selects the best eleven players from Europe, whilst ignoring their own Serie A, and this week the Spain international has made the cut.

Yesterday Alonso stole the show during Tottenham’s first Premier League game at Wembley. The Chelsea star opened the scoring with a stunning free kick in the first half, and despite Tottenham drawing level, the Spaniard netted with a late winner.

Alonso’s brace helped Chelsea to their first win of the season after losing to Burnley on the opening day.

Sunday’s 2-1 victory over their London rivals will have taken some pressure off Antonio Conte, after a difficult week for the Chelsea manager.

With the continuing saga involving Diego Costa and the loss to Burnley at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea needed to get something out of the game.

Alonso played his part and fully deserves his place in the team, in a back-line which includes fellow Spaniard Marc Bartra of Borussia Dortmund, and Atletico Madrid’s Uruguayan defender Jose Gimenez.
