After the recent saga involving Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool have turned their attentions to Fenerbahce’s Simon Kjaer, report SporX.

It was claimed this week Liverpool met with Southampton’s Van Dijk to discuss a possible transfer, but this was then leaked. Liverpool have since issued a statement saying they’ve ended their interest in the Southampton captain, and it’s all quite embarrassing.

SporX say following this week’s events Kjaer is now one of the names on Jurgen’s Klopp’s shortlist, but a deal at this stage could be complicated.

Fenerbahce are hoping Liverpool offer a fee in the region of £15m, and if that figure is met the Turkish side may be tempted to sell their prized asset.

However, new Fenerbahce manager Aykut Kocaman is very keen to work with the Dane and he’s made it clear to the club’s board that Kjaer and Martin Sktrel can’t be sold because he thinks this partnership could be decisive in the title race next season.

The Denmark captain has also been drawing attention from the likes of Marseille and AC Milan, and the player will decide his future after his wedding this summer.

Kjaer is enjoying his time in Istanbul, but continuing his career in France, Italy or England could be an option, and Liverpool would be a very tempting prospect.
