FC Porto have got themselves into some financial difficulty, and need to balance their finances to prevent further FFP sanctions. The Portuguese club didn’t complete the sales they expected to during the last summer transfer window, but keeping that talent didn’t see them pick up any trophies either.
This summer will see a very clear effort to sell several players, as Porto are forced to get their financial situation back closer to the black. This week Portugal’s Sabado, not usually one for transfer rumours, reported that Tottenham are prepared to pay Ricardo Pereira’s €25m release clause.
That could be an ideal situation for Porto, with Pereira having spent the past two seasons on loan at Nice. Porto’s team wouldn’t actually be losing anything by sending Pereira to Tottenham, and their bank account would be €25m better off.
Manchester City, Barcelona, and PSG are also said to be interested in Pereira, but for them he’s only Plan B, and for Tottenham the 23 year old is said to be Plan A.
Pereira has done very well at Nice, so the interest makes some sense, and he’s a right-back/right winger, so primed to fill a possible gap left by Kyle Walker. Porto want to renew Pereira’s contract, which ends in June 2019, which could just be so they can ask for more than €25m.
But right now, the Portuguese club aren’t in the best negtioatiing position, so if Tottenham swoop in with the €25m, Pereira could decide to give his nod to the deal.
