Although the Super Bowl previews are currently taking a major part of North American newspapers’ sports sections, there’s still a little room left to talk about what they call ‘soccer’.

This Wednesday, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports on the transfer of Miguel Almirón from MLS side Atlanta United to Newcastle United.

They claim that ‘according to a person close to the player’, the clubs agreed a fee on Tuesday, and the Paraguayan star flew to England on the same day to have a medical with his new club.

The newspaper doesn’t seem to know much about the figures paid by Newcastle. They mention that a fee of US$27m has been reported, while Atlanta considered Almirón to be worth US$30m.

Atlanta found themselves forced to let one of their stars go, as MLS rules only allow clubs to have three players over the salary cap, and with the arrival of Pity Martinez, the club had four.

Besides the praise The Atlanta Journal-Constitution gives Almirón for his attacking skills, they also highlight the fact that the midfielder’s defensive skills are ‘underrated’, as he doesn’t get enough credit for helping his team when pressing.
