Wolfsburg striker Wout Weghorst has admitted the transfer speculation about a move to Tottenham in the summer ended up affecting his game.

Weghorst was heavily linked with a move to Tottenham throughout the summer, with Spurs spending the transfer window searching for a back up to Harry Kane.

The Dutch forward was rumoured to be one of those on their list, having managed 20 goals and five assists in 43 games last season.

They eventually settled on Benfica striker Carlos Vinicius, who joined on a season-long loan deal from the Portuguese side.

That was after weeks of speculation about Weghorst, though, with reports claiming a move was ‘very realistic’ at one point.

That is something Weghorst has admitted himself, revealing in October that the interest was serious and that he still fancied a move to the Premier League.

He’s now opened up on how the transfer speculation affected him, revealing that it ended up ruining his form.

“Those were hectic days,” he told De Telegraaf.

“You can say very boldly that you focus on your own club, but unconsciously it does something to you, of course. You also saw it in my game.

“Looking back on that situation, I think: sometimes you also have to be satisfied.

“That does not mean that I do not want to make the step to the European top, on the contrary. But I am just very happy in Wolfsburg and get a lot of appreciation here.”
