On Friday, Italy will face North Macedonia in the European qualifiers and Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario will be forced to miss the clash.
The Italian Football Federation [FIGC] have confirmed on their official website that the 27-year-old is down with an illness. This has seen Azzurri manager Luciano Spalletti call up Atalanta stopper Marco Carnesecchi in place of the Tottenham player.
“During the night Guglielmo Vicario suffered a slight fever. Therefore, as a precaution, Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi has been called up and will reach Coverciano in the late morning,” a statement read.
Despite Carnesecchi’s inclusion, the Spurs goalkeeper is still in Spalletti’s squad and could recover on time when Italy take on Ukraine on Monday.
Vicario received his first call-up in September 2022 and that has continued even after he moved to the north London club in the last window. However, the former Empoli man had to settle for a place on the bench and is yet to make an appearance for the national team.
The 27-year-old has replaced Hugo Lloris to become the first-choice stopper at Spurs, and has impressed for them this season. Vicario has kept four clean sheets and conceded 14 goals from 12 games, out of which six were conceded in the last two games.
