Felipe Anderson returned to Lazio in 2021 after spending three years at West Ham United.

The attacking midfielder’s struggles with the Hammers saw them send him out on a season-long deal to FC Porto in 2020.

He failed to impress in Portugal and a door was opened for him to return to the Serie A side.

Anderson’s decision to leave West Ham has paid off as the 29-year-old has not only regained a prominent role at Lazio but is also a vital player for Maurizio Sarri.

The Brazilian has been a regular for the Biancocelesti, missing only two matches since the start of the 2021/22 season. He has scored 15 goals and registered 14 assists from 83 matches in all competitions.

Gazzetta dello Sport points this out ahead of Lazio’s UEFA Conference League tie against AZ Alkmaar today, stating the former Chelsea manager has been proven right to bet on Anderson following his ‘controversial’ spell at West Ham.

Having failed to sign Anderson for Napoli, Sarri had ‘no doubts’ about taking the player, when he was made aware of his availability in 2021.

“Let’s take him immediately” was the manager’s message to Lazio.

Ciro Immobile’s absence means the South American is likely to lead Lazio’s attack against AZ.
