On Sunday, SportMediaset in Italy released an ‘article’, if you want to call it that, claiming that Sunderland were interested in signing Nice’s Wylan Cyprien.

While it’s very believable that David Moyes would be interested in the player, joining Sunderland at this moment in time probably isn’t top of Cyprien’s list.

The 22-year-old centre midfielder has been one of the revelations of Ligue 1 this season after transferring from Ligue 2 side Lens in the summer, with few expecting him to make the leap so seamlessly.

With Nice comfortably in third and a Champions League qualification spot nearly secured, exchanging such a great opportunity with what could realistically be Championship football next season doesn’t seem likely.

Of course, the Black Cats could very well turn things around between now and the end of the season, leading to the prospect being far more enticing, but even then, having just moved to Nice, a club he’s clearly very happy at, and European football, it seems unlikely.

It’s a nice idea, though.

Cyprien has scored seven goals and picked up three assists in 30 appearances this season for Lucien Favre’s side.
