Southampton’s advances to sign Loïc Badé on the deadline day will not yield any results as the Rennes player is set to join Nottingham Forest on a loan deal with an option to buy.

Badé’s imminent move to Forest will force the Saints to look elsewhere to further strengthen the centre-back position. Among them is VfL Wolfsburg’s Maxence Lacroix.

That’s according to Goal France reporter Marc Mechenoua, who took to Twitter to report that Southampton have ‘opened talks’ with the Bundesliga side over a potential deal for the 22-year-old.

Lacroix has played every minute for the German club in the league and also started for them in his side’s DFB-Pokal first round win over Carl Zeiss Jena.

Although Ralph Hassenhüttl’s side have opened talks, the distance between the clubs, and also with the player, ‘seem quite far apart’. Mechenoua further adds that ‘unless the situation turns around’, the Frenchman should continue at Wolfsburg.

Marseille’s Duje Ćaleta-Car is also a target for the Premier League side and reports from France on Thursday stated he is close to joining Southampton.
