Southampton defender Maya Yoshida’s stay at Sampdoria will be dependant on the Italian side avoiding relegation this season.

That’s according to Il Secolo XIX, who report on the Japan international’s future at the Serie A side beyond this summer.

Yoshida joined Sampdoria on loan in the January transfer window after finding his playing time at St Mary’s reduced under Ralph Hassehüttl.

He has proven to be a big hit at the club, despite only managing one appearance before the break imposed by the Coronavirus outbreak, as a result of his various efforts to integrate himself in his temporary home.

Efforts such as buying for local hospitals to posting videos of him learning Italian, he has impressed most with his efforts, and they would be keen to keep him beyond this summer.

Il Secolo explain, however, that any move for him will be heavily dependant on Sampdoria avoiding relegation from Serie A.

They currently sit just a point outside the relegation zone and need to know their own future before they can look at investment ahead of next season.

Sampdoria are evaluating the options to keep him, although his ‘economic claims’ would have to fit, with it explained he currently has ‘high economic demands’ given his wages at Southampton.

Yoshida, therefore, needs to impress as much on the pitch as he has off it, to try and secure a permanent exit from St Mary’s and a move that would seemingly suit all parties.
