On Monday evening, we covered comments Steven Bergwijn made after a training session with the Netherlands.

The Tottenham Hotspur player has been linked with a move to Ajax since the January window, with the Dutch club unable to agree a fee with Spurs during the winter market.

Bergwijn explained that as far as he’s concerned he’s leaving the London side this summer, and revealed he’s had approaches from several clubs. The Dutchman made a point of insisting he has no grudge against Antonio Conte, he just wants to leave Tottenham to secure more prominence elsewhere.

Tuesday’s edition of De Telegraaf has the player on the front cover of their sport section, hyping the comments he made. Inside, there’s also some words from national team manager Louis van Gaal, who is quoted as saying: “I want him to go to Ajax as soon as possible.”

Van Gaal also praised the player’s performance against Belgium: “There were two stars for me: Frenkie de Jong and Steven Bergwijn.”

In addition, De Telegraaf say the manager is concerned about the 24-year-old picking up fitness issues due to a lack of playing time, with the the newspaper stating: ‘In terms of load capacity, a switch to Amsterdam would be a blessing, Van Gaal emphasised, after he was confronted with the injuries that Bergwijn now sometimes incurs in London due to the limited number of playing minutes.’

Ajax will still need to match the €25-30m Tottenham are asking for.
