Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven “still has something to prove” despite his good start to life in the Premier League.

That’s according to journalist Valentijn Driessen, who believes people shouldn’t be getting away with their praise of the defender just yet.

Van de Ven has been starring for Tottenham since a big money move from Wolfsburg in the summer, quickly establishing himself as a key player in Ange Postecoglou’s defence.

He’s earned plenty of plaudits since the start of the season, with many impressed by not only his defensive nous but his comfort in possession and as an attacking tool.

That’s seen him make his way into the Netherlands set up, where he is a part of Ronald Koeman’s plans for this international break and indeed moving forwards.

He’s yet to establish himself with his nation as he has at Tottenham, with his latest a 15 minute appearance in the win over Greece.

That game saw him come on at left back towards the end of the game but fail to impress, with a big mistake nearly gifting Greece the opener.

That’s already seen him criticised in the Netherlands today and Driessen has joined in on that, insisting his lack of experience showed in his latest display.

“In the final phase against Greece, the Netherlands still ran into problems,” he said.

“Van de Ven loses a ball that results in a dangerous attack. These are moments when you definitely have to play. Then you see that it is a player who has not yet played many matches at this level.

“He came in very well against France. You can have him there. He is strong and fast. He still has something to prove. Now we are completely impressed by ten minutes against a France that plays at eighty percent.

“He did make a good tackle, I have to admit that, but we don’t have to go all out when someone makes a good tackle or gives a good pass.”
