According to a claim in the Italian media Sheffield Wednesday are in pole position to sign former Arsenal defender Johan Djourou.

The 30 year old is currently a free agent after leaving Bundesliga side Hamburg this summer.

TMW say despite the interest from Genoa it’s expected Djourou will be returning to England with Sheffield Wednesday.

It’s been reported the Serie A club have contacted the Swiss international with regards to a move, but it seems the player will turn down the chance to play in Italy.

Sheffield Wednesday will offer Djourou the chance to play in the Championship next season, as they look to go one better in their pursuit of promotion to the Premier League.

The Owls have reached the play-offs for the past two seasons, but have failed to get over the line.

Djourou joined Hamburg from Arsenal in 2014, but the central defender hardly figured last season due to injuries, and selection. He started just 12 league games for the German club, and subsequently wasn’t offered a new deal at the end of last season.
