On Wednesday, Spanish outlet Galicia Press claimed that Celta Vigo were close to making the biggest sale in their history. They claimed that Maxi Gomes was on his way to West Ham United in a £40m deal.

The news sounded pretty exciting, although not many outlets backed up the information. Then when trying to find out more about the transfer, we heard from our own sources that an agreement wasn’t close at all, as no bid was made by West Ham.

Now it sounds like Galicia Press are backing off from their own claims. In a story about one of Celta Vigo’s possible signings today, they don’t take Gomez’s transfer as quite so close.

They say West Ham are still waiting to see if they will sell one of their strikers, and haven’t made any ‘important moves’ regarding Gomez’s signing.

Annoyingly, Galicia Press now refers to the £40m amount as a claim from the Italian press, even though it was their own website who reported it on Wednesday.

So it really sounds like they gave up on their own claims, and even if West Ham are interested, things are not that close to happening.
