Serie A side Roma are considering a move for Manchester United’s Marcos Rojo if they cannot get Chris Smalling on a permanent deal this summer.
Smalling is currently on loan in Rome, having joined the Italian side in the summer after falling down the pecking order at Old Trafford.
He has been a big hit in Italy, and they are keen to turn his move into a permanent one if they can agree on a deal with Manchester United.
Whether that is possible is debatable, though, with United’s asking price of €18m, plus Smalling having other suitors, some in the Premier League, making it tricky to get a deal over the line.
The Argentine was offered to Roma in January but instead ended up back in his homeland with Estudiantes.
His deal at the Argentine club does not have a purchase option, though and he is being ‘considered’ by Roma if they cannot get Smalling.
His price tag would be €10m, so cheaper than Smalling, and there is a feeling at the club that his ‘profile’ would be right, mainly because the club want an experienced centre back to pair with their current options.
Much will depend on Smalling, whose future probably isn’t at Manchester United, but is currently up in the air.
