Roma ‘intend’ to ask Chelsea to renew Davide Zappacosta’s loan deal at the club next summer after his injury this year.
The right-back joined the Serie A side on loan in the summer transfer window, with Frank Lampard’s youth revolution pushing him down the pecking order.
He managed just 12 minutes of football with the club though, with a disrupted calf muscle and then a cruciate ligament rupture bringing a premature end to his season.
He is set to return to Chelsea in the summer although that may be a short return if Gazzetta Dello Sport are to be believed.
They report Roma intend to ask Chelsea to renew Zappacosta’s loan deal for next season as he has not been able to ‘prove his worth’ because of injury.
Their intention is to have him in their starting line up next season and give him the chance to prove himself to Paulo Fonseca.
Whether Chelsea are willing to sanction a second deal isn’t mentioned, although it’s unlikely they will put up much resistance, especially given Reece James’ development this season.
Zappacosta is tied to Stamford Bridge until 2022 after signing a one-year extension before his move to Roma last summer, so another loan deal would make sense if their want to try and sell the Italian at some point in future.
