Atlético Madrid are making an attempt to snatch the signing of Johnny Cardoso from Tottenham, by moving for him in the January transfer window.
That’s according to Estadio Deportivo, who cover the situation today and the role that Tottenham still have to play in proceedings.
They report that the American is in Atlético’s sights and while Betis are suggesting that their economic situation is not the best heading to January, he could be sold.
They know Cardoso is one of the players in the squad with the highest market value and any sale could help to bring around a ‘winter revolution’ that has been planned by those in charge of the Spanish club.
Atlético have been watching him for a while and Diego Simeone was left ‘captivated’ by his performance when they took Betis on at the end of October. He has asked the club to try and sign him. IN fact, journalist Rubén Uría reports he is now a priority signing for January.
A move in January would help them get ahead of Tottenham, who have a purchase clause on the player as part of the deal to sell Giovani Lo Celso last summer. That, however, only activates in the summer.
That means another suitor, such as Atlético, can move in the January transfer window and get ahead of them in the race.
There’s no mention of whether Tottenham have an option to stop that happening, but there’s surely a possibility that there’s a provision in the deal to protect them. Otherwise, it would be a major oversight from Spurs.
We’re sure there’s more to come from this but with Simeone seemingly pushing Atlético to buy, this is one to keep a name on moving forwards.
