Leeds United have scouted Sporting a few times recently, with their prime target likely to be Tobias Figueiredo.

A week ago claims in Portugal surfaced that Leeds United had opened talks to sign the defender, despite having not been able to catch him in action much for Sporting’s first team.

Figueiredo had been playing with the second string recently, and the Leeds United claims of talks came just after he’d put in a good performance for Sporting B against Porto B, with some reports highlighting just how good he was.

Even then, it made much more sense for Leeds to sign the player on a loan deal, and then possibly make it permanent in the summer transfer window.

Sure enough, claims then followed of the 23 year old being close to a move to England on loan, and with no clubs mentioned, Leeds United were the likeliest destination.

The next development came on Wednesday night, as Figueiredo captained Sporting’s first team to a 4-0 victory over Vilaverdense in the Taca de Portugal.

Sporting fielded a weakened side, hence the defender’s inclusion, but it was still surprising to see him as captain, and quite possibly a treat before a departure to England.
