It seems that Manchester City have managed to sign Ederson for much less than his release €60m clause.

Even though the Portuguese press insisted for months that Benfica would demand the full amount, Record shows up today saying the player is leaving for €40m (£34.8m).

They say the early reports from England which claimed the goalkeeper would cost City €51.6m are inaccurate, and the final fee had been agreed for a few days already.

They also deny the reports which said sorting out the third party ownership is what delayed the deal. That’s because Benfica actually own 100% of the player, and only need to share the profit from the sale.

So Manchester City did not need to have any contact with his former club Rio Ave, who are still getting a percentage.

Even though Benfica officially have the right to only 50% of the fee, Record claims the club will still negotiate with Jorge Mendes and Rio Ave to get €30m from the deal.

We wish them luck with that, they’ll need it. Don’t be surprised if a Benfica fringe player, or several, ends up at Rio Ave.

Record say that although the player had already travelled to Manchester, the clubs only shook hands last night, and the medical and official announcement have been delayed a day.

The expectation in Portugal was that Ederson could be the most expensive goalkeeper ever. But his transfer in Euros has not surpassed Buffon’s, who moved to Juventus in 2001 for €53m.

However, Record took the Sterling rate from that time to say the Brazilian is now the most expensive keeper in the British currency.

Way back in 2001, the price paid by Juve was equal to only £32.6m, because of different exchange rates.

Unbelievable.
