Aitor Karanka taking over at Leeds United was always odds on in the case Garry Monk left. Even when it looked like Monk was staying on at the club, it was pretty certain that if things changed, Karanka was the likeliest candidate.

Victor Orta being linked to Leeds, and then eventually making the move, only served to make things fit into place even more neatly.

Karanka is Basque and the region’s El Desmarque report today that he’s very near to taking over at Leeds United, but it’s not the only offer he’s had. The former Middlesbrough manager has received approaches from China and the US, but turned them down, favouring at stay in English football.

Even the Alegrian national team was a possibility for Karanka, but it’s not what the manager wants.

However, this is Aitor Karanka, so until it’s announced, and he’s signed up with Leeds United, there’s always the possibility he’ll be discouraged by something and decide it’s not the job for him. As he showed at Middlesbrough more than once, Karanka is very much a heart on sleeve kind of guy.

Staying in England is Karanka’s aim, and media local to where the manager is from feel that Leeds United is his destination.
