Newcastle United are reportedly edging closer to signing the Mexican defender Diego Reyes.

According to an exclusive report from Calcio Mercato, the 25-year-old should be signing for the Magpies ‘in the coming days’.

The Italian website’s interest in the case is because Lazio had also been keeping tabs on the player, but have apparently given up on the chase.

Newcastle shouldn’t spend much on signing Reyes, as the defender’s contract with FC Porto has expired last month, making him a free agent.

Signed from Club America back in 2013, Reyes made 37 appearances for Porto, but ended up spending more time in La Liga, as he had loan spells at two clubs there: Espanyol and Real Sociedad.

The player had been called up to play the World Cup for Mexico, but ended up missing the tournament due to a hamstring injury.

According to recent reports from the Turkish press, Fenerbahce and West Ham were in the race for Reyes as well.
