Liverpool have been credited with interest in Athletic Club’s Nico Williams since the end of last year.

On Thursday, Estadio Deportivo stated the Reds made contact and ‘asked about’ the winger, but a deal never materialised in the last window.

Liverpool are still interested in the 21-year-old, if a report from today’s Sport is to be believed.

It’s said the Merseyside club will have to compete with Barcelona and others for the Spain international.

Williams’ deal lasts until the end of this season and has a €50m release clause. The report states the Basque club’s desire is to extend his contract for a few seasons with the same clause, so that he can take the next big step in the coming years.

Barcelona, on the other hand, are hoping to take the player for free next summer.

It won’t be easy for them as the newspaper states the Catalan club have to face a battle from Liverpool and a few other clubs who have shown a keen interest in the attacker.

According to Sport, Williams’ profile and qualities ‘would be ideal’ for the Premier League, where Jürgen Klopp’s side are one of the clubs following him very closely.

Perhaps moving early would be the wise choice here.
