A couple of days ago, Mousa Dembélé had a chat with some members of the Belgian press about a few things, including his performance against France in the World Cup semi-final.
Relayed by Het Laatste Nieuws, the Tottenham midfielder said he had ‘his ideas’ about that particular game, but that he didn’t want to go into any details, not wanting to talk about it.
It appears that DH had a slightly longer discussion with him, and he opened up a bit more about another subject: his international retirement.
Asked if his decision to stay at Spurs, after a summer filled with speculation, had any impact on continuing with the national team, he said: “Not at all. I’m not 21. If you ask me if I’m thinking about retirement, I have to admit that I won’t be with the Red Devils in five years time.
“However, I’m enjoying myself. I want to stay available. I have fun in this team. The day I don’t feel good any longer – either physically or mentally – I’ll tell the manager. For now, that’s not the case”.
Asked jokingly if he was maybe waiting for Jan Vertonghen, one of his best friends, to announce retirement before him, he replied: “Who knows? Actually, I might have to wait until I’m 40. (Laughs)”
Over the course of the summer, Inter were said to be very interested in Mousa Dembélé, whose contract with Tottenham is set to expire in June 2019, meaning that, should he not renew in the next few months, he’ll be free to speak to other clubs in January regarding a potential free transfer.
